How Much Is A Microdose?

Updated: Jan 9, 2023

Microdosing involves taking tiny amounts of psychedelic substances for the purpose of achieving positive results without sensory overwhelm and impact on day to day activities.

The most common reported benefits of microdosing include improved mood, enhanced creativity, reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety, reduction in chronic pain, improved self-image, self-awareness, and focus.

The standard way of calculating a microdose is taking 1/10th - 1/20th of a normal dose. The most popular microdosing substances are psilocybin and LSD. Below are the optimal microdosing amounts for each:

  • Psilocybin: 100-300 mg

  • LSD: 5-20 mg

It is advised to start with the smallest effective dose and increase dosage incrementally as necessary. Individuals with anxiety disorders are encouraged to take the minimum effective dosage to avoid increased anxiety.

It is important to note that microdosing is a subtle experience. Strong visual and auditory distortions, and increased anxiety are a sign that the dosage needs to be lowered.

Larger doses do not necessarily mean more benefits; when microdosing, LESS IS MORE! In my practice, I rarely, if ever recommend a dose of psilocybin above 90mg and the outcomes remain incredibly potent even slightly below the 1/20th of a regular dose.

While some research suggests that large doses of psychedelics might exacerbate hypertension and heart palpitations, microdosing is generally considered safe. Individuals with heart conditions should consult their physician before starting a microdosing practice.
